Dentures

Dentures

Dentures are removable false teeth that are worn to replace damaged or missing teeth. They are custom-made for you by our dental prosthetists (advanced dental technician). Dentures are available as either full or partial dentures depending on the number of teeth need to be replaced. You may need a denture is you have lost your natural teeth due to injury, decay or other damages. Loss of teeth can cause loss of self-confidence or self-consciousness when eating, talking or smiling.

Partial Denture – fabricated to replace some missing teeth

Complete Denture – fabricated to replace all teeth in the jaw (edentulous cases)

If you are having your teeth removed, you may choose to have an immediate denture made on the same day. At Eastwood Dental Clinic, we offer same-day dentures so that you can have false teeth after extraction. This option may require frequent adjustments as your gums heal after extraction.

How to care for dentures

Daily maintenance is vital for the longevity of your denture and your overall oral health.

  • Clean dentures in the morning and at night, by using a soft toothbrush or denture brush
  • Don’t forget to brush your remaining natural teeth, gums and tongue as usual
  • Keep clean denture in a cup of fresh cold water or denture cleaning solution overnight. Do not wear them to sleep, your gum needs to rest.
  • Do not soak in hot water and do not attempt to adjust them yourself

After receiving your dentures, you may feel unusual and may need time to adjust to your new teeth. You’ll be able to start by eating soft foods, then gradually introduce hard foods again.

Overdentures (Removable appliance)

Overdentures are replacement teeth retained by two or more dental implants to help both partial and fully edentulous patients regain a quality of life. These can be removed as well, however, they are more stable and retentive in the mouth. An implant-retained denture has attachments that snap onto attachments on the implants. Missing teeth can cause the distance between your nose and chin to shrink, making your face look prematurely aged. Overdentures may be a good option for you if you are missing teeth but have efficient bone to support dental implants. Adequate cleaning and hygiene measures are crucial for long term clinical success.

Implant-supported prosthesis (Fixed)

Some patients prefer fixed implant restorations to have the feel of ‘natural teeth’ such as an implant bridge. Implant bridges provide improved stability allowing you to chew food more thoroughly and efficiently. They also help stimulate your jaw bone and slow the resorption (shrinkage) process that occurs when there are missing teeth. Fixed implant-supported prosthesis also have fewer ongoing maintenance requirements than overdentures (removable).
